What Are Stainless Steel 904L Pipe Fittings?
The SS 904L Pipe Fitting is manufactured using super-austenitic stainless steel, which contains a higher concentration of nickel, molybdenum, and copper than standard 300-series grades. The alloy contains approximately 24-26% nickel, 4-5% molybdenum, and copper adds another 1-2%. This combination raises resistance to sulfuric acid attack noticeably. Chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion, the two failure modes that end 316L service life early in marine or acidic environments, don't progress the same way in 904L. The addition of copper significantly improves resistance to sulfuric acid, making 904L suitable for pulp and paper plants, phosphoric acid units, and other acidic process environments.
Features & Manufacturing Standards
Fittings are made of solution-annealed 904L billet or plate stock and can be manufactured in seamless, welded, or fabricated construction depending on size and pressure class. Dimensional checks are done according to ASME B16.9 and MSS-SP standards. The mechanical properties are tested by tensile test and hardness test, and the defects of the welds are inspected by radiography and dye penetrant testing. These are submitted with third-party inspection reports containing data relating to chemical composition and non-destructive testing for each batch. Packaging is in the form of wooden boxes, pallets, or cartons, depending on shipment specifications, and is wrapped to protect product surfaces from damage during shipment.
